At The Movies
Another Year
A poignant portrait of a year in the life of a happily
married couple, along with their not so happy friends. A
married couple who have managed to remain blissfully
happy into their autumn years, are surrounded over the
course of the four seasons of one average year by
friends, colleagues, and family who all seem to suffer
some degree of unhappiness. Another Year is a triumph
for Mike Leigh with a film loaded with
excellent dialogue, inviting characters and a director
proving you can create tension in a movie merely be
filming a family dinner.

The American
As an assassin, Jack (George Clooney) is constantly on the move
and always alone. After a job in Sweden ends more harshly than expected for this
American abroad, Jack retreats to the Italian countryside. He relishes being
away from death for a spell as he holes up in a small medieval town. While
there, Jack takes an assignment to construct a weapon for a mysterious contact,
Mathilde. Savoring the peaceful quietude he finds in the mountains of Abruzzo,
Jack accepts the friendship of local priest Father Benedetto and pursues a
torrid liaison with a beautiful woman, Clara. Jack and Clara's time together
evolves into a romance, one seemingly free of danger. But by stepping out of the
shadows, Jack may be tempting fate.
The Buzz...
Reese Witherspoon is ready to make it official with boyfriend
Jim Toth. The couple are engaged after dating for about a year. This
will be the second marriage for Witherspoon, who has two children, Ava, 11 and
Deacon, 7, with ex-husband Ryan Phillippe.
Airplane!, The Empire Strikes Back, The Exorcist,
and All the President's Men, were among the 25 films named by the
Library of Congress to the National Film Registry for their
cultural, historical or aesthetic significance. Though many of the films named
to the list include people who recently died (Airplane star Leslie
Nielsen, Empire director Irvin Kershner, Pink
Panther director Blake Edwards) a spokesman said their
inclusion was likely a coincidence.
Thor star Chris Hemsworth and his longtime girlfriend,
Spanish actress Elsa Pataky, are now husband and wife. Hemsworth,
27, who portrays the Marvel Comics character in the upcoming films, Thor
(costarring Natalie Portman) and The Avengers, grew up in Australia. He and
Pataky, 34, best known stateside for her role alongside Samuel L. Jackson
in the 2006 film Snakes on a Plane, were married over the holiday.
Teen Mom star Amber Portwood's life is about to get
a whole lot better. The reality TV star, who was released from jail Tuesday
after spending 24 hours behind bars on charges of battery for fighting with her
ex-fiancé Gary Shirley, will soon be reunited with her 2 year old
daughter, Leah, according to her lawyer.
The United States Postal Service is set to continue their successful
Art of Disney program of stamps designed from studio properties and
are set to issue a new step of stamps featuring popular Pixar characters.
The new set will feature a pane of twenty stamps with five designs from Pixar
films: Lightning McQueen and Mater from Cars;
Remy the rat and Linguini from Ratatouille; Buzz
Lightyear and two of the green, three-eyed aliens from Toy Story;
Carl Fredricksen and Dug from Up; and the robot
WALL*E from WALL*E. The stamps will go on sale at the end of next summer, on
August 19th and will make a nice gift for the Pixar fan in your life.
Katy Perry and Russell Brand revealed that they are
looking to begin a charity to help the impoverished, after Brand was able to
turn his own life around following a nasty drug habit.
MGM will vacate its namesake MGM Tower in Century City and move
into new office space in Beverly Hills, according to the Hollywood
Reporter, which cited sources it didn't name. The studio has reportedly
signed a lease and will be moving into a six story, 144,000 square foot office
building on Beverly Drive that was initially slated to be the William
Morris Agency's new headquarters before the firm merged with Endeavor
in 2009.
Five individuals were acknowledged by The Kennedy Center
Honors, which aired on Dec. 28 on CBS, including country singer
Merle Haggard, dancer Bill T. Jones, composer Jerry
Herman, Oprah Winfrey and Paul McCartney. During the
event Gwen Stefani and her reunited band No Doubt,
Steven Tyler, Mavis Staples, James Taylor,
Dave Grohl and Norah Jones all took the stage to
serenade McCartney with Beatles tunes.
Sears and Kmart have launched Alphaline Entertainment,
a movie download service that, like similar services from Best Buy,
Amazon, and Wal-mart, offers streaming movies the same day new
titles are released in stores. Alphaline is powered by Sonic’s
Roxionow backend. Registration is free; rentals are $3.99; purchased titles
are $19.95.
Just a few weeks before the Golden Globe ceremony, tension is
soaring between dick clark productions and the Hollywood
Foreign Press Association as the telecast producer’s
contract is about to expire and a lawsuit stands between the parties and a new
agreement. The HFPA contract with dick clark productions, which reaps the
producer an estimated $3 million in annual revenues, ends after the 2011
telecast. Relations have been deteriorating between the two sides for some time,
but took a serious turn for the worse in September when dick clark productions (dcp)
unilaterally negotiated a new, seven-year contract with NBC to air the
Golden Globes.
It's a nice problem to have if you're the Walt Disney Co,
but not if you're trying to visit the Anaheim theme parks. I'm told that both
yesterday and today Disneyland began turning away would-be visitors
within hours of opening and then redirected them to California
Adventure until that park reached capacity, too.
The Foo Fighters made a rare appearance at Paladino's, a
small club in Tarzana, California, and debuted new music from their forthcoming
album. Billboard reports that the band played to a small crowd of family,
friends and a few lucky fans and, in addition to playing new songs, rocked the
crowd with hits including Times Like These, My Hero, The
Pretender and Learn to Fly. Some of the new tunes had the titles
Dear Rosemary, White Limo and Back and Forth.
Even former Nirvana bassist Krist Novoselic came on stage
and performed on a song allegedly called I Should Have Known.
