Off The Record...

Boo Radleys

Kingsize

The band's sixth, and perhaps final album is a career landmark in that it finds a balance between the dual nature of the Boo Radleys' sound.  Delivering everything from pop singles to Sgt. Pepper inspired songs laced with fluent guitar harmonies, the Boo Radleys are building an impressive catalog with pop grandeur and finesse. Kingsize is a formidable addition to the band's legacy.

At The Movies...

A Simple Plan

When two brothers find $4 million dollars in stolen money, the sight of all of that cold, hard cash proves to be too much to resist and the brothers and a friend decide to keep their discovery.  Before long they begin to mistrust one another, lie, cheat and eventually commit murder. Bill Paxton is riveting as the ordinary man who is transformed into a schemer while Billy Bob Thornton, as Hank's simpleton brother Jacob, turns in another one of his stylized performances.

On Video...

There’s Something About Mary

The sleeper hit of the year, brought to us by the creators of Dumb and Dumber and Kingpin, Something About Mary is like a breath of fresh air.  Matt Dillon and Ben Stiller lead a gallery of unscrupulous characters that vie for the attention of Mary (Cameron Diaz).  Despite the spurts of low brow humor, this movie is clever and sweetly romantic, with loads of scenes that will keep you rolling in the aisles.  Easily the funniest release in years, this is the film that friends are telling friends not to miss.

The Buzz...

In another sign of lost youth, Mattel’s Barbie, who turns 40 this year, will feature a butterfly tattoo on her stomach and have friends who will sport nose rings in an effort to bring the doll up to date.  CD-ROM’s will be also be packaged along with the ageless beauty.

Another 40 year anniversary takes place this week, the plane crash that killed rock idols Ritchie Valens, J.P. The Big Bopper Richardson and Buddy Holly, which was immortalized forever as the day the music died.

Melrose Place is getting an eviction notice after seven seasons and 227 episodes.  Producers are promising to send off the show with the fanfare it deserves.

Former Monkee, Michael Nesmith, has won a $47 million dollar settlement from PBS for breach of contract and interference for the way several shows started by Nesmith’s production company were handled by the network.

Gene Roddenberry's Earth: Final Conflict has been renewed for two more seasons

A two-hour Star Trek: Voyager movie will air in February.  In the film, the powerful Borg Queen reassimilates Seven of Nine into the Borg hive.

Disney has announced an April 20 video release date for A Bug's Life, which will contain both sets of outtakes which ran with the closing credits in the theaters. There will be four different designs for the video cover, each featuring a different character from the film.

The Sci-Fi Channel announced this week the recruitment of World Wrestling Federation star The Undertaker to promote their three new series Poltergeist: The Legacy, Farscape, and First Wave.

Actor Sean Penn wants Eddie Vedder to act in a film he plans to direct. Penn hasn't said much about the project, except that he wrote the screenplay and that he plans to begin working on the movie in the spring.

Motley Crue frontman Vince Neil, Ronnie James Dio, and members of Damn Yankees, Alice in Chains and Ratt will appear on a forthcoming Aerosmith tribute album. Guitarist Joe Perry's son Adrian will play bass on a track.

Andrew Lloyd Webber has suspended plans to produce a film version of The Phantom of the Opera and has instead decided to make his less-well-known Aspects of Love his next film undertaking.
