Golden Smog
Weird Tales
Tales is the third release from
the alt-country supergroup featuring Wilco's Jeff Tweedy, the Jayhawks'
Gary Louris and Marc Perlman, Soul Asylum's Dan Murphy, and
Run Westy Run's Kraig
Johnson. For this album the boys enlisted Big Star co-founder Jody Stephens to
play drums. Think of a great roots rock band playing in a small club after
hours just for the fun of it, and you'll have a good idea of what this album is
like.
At The
Movies...
Patch Adams
Robin Williams stars as Dr.
Hunter "Patch" Adams, a medical student in the '70s who defied conventionality
by incorporating a radical sense of humor into an unorthodox style of practicing
medicine. Tom Shadyac (Ace Ventura, Liar Liar) directs this portrayal of a man's
struggle to help others as he learns from being both a patient and a doctor.
Pure fun.

The Slums
Of Beverly Hills
Wonderfully funny and gentle
coming-of-age-comedy about a 15-year-old girl's growing problems, her rising
sexuality and her dysfunctional family, who move from dump to dump in Beverly
Hills so the kids can stay in the better Beverly Hills schools. Complicating
matters is the arrival of a messed-up cousin, whose stay with the family poses
both a salvation and a threat. Though set in 1976, there's more than nostalgia
here. Highly recommended.
